A Public Belonging Commitment

Artisanat16 juin 2026

We believe public spaces shape how we live together. As cities become denser and society more polarized, the quality of our shared spaces matters more than ever. They are where we meet, pause, participate, and coexist — and where a sense of belonging is built, or lost. This belief guides what we do at Vestre — crafting wood and metal into Public Belonging.

A Public Belonging Commitment

Public Belonging is a human experience shaped by presence, participation, and attachment. It emerges when people feel welcome, connected, and at home in shared spaces.

Vestre has produced high-quality street furniture since 1947. Today, we collaborate with leading designers, planners, and developers worldwide to put Public Belonging into practice — reducing loneliness, supporting everyday democracy, and contributing to safer, healthier, more humane cities and societies.

These five principles express our learnings and our commitment at Vestre. They define how to design for Public Belonging—a shared call to action for everyone shaping public spaces.

01 — We believe safety is the foundation of public life
People cannot belong where they do not feel secure. Safety enables presence; physical, psychological, and social. Well-lit, legible, and humane spaces allow people to linger, not just pass through. Safety is about comfort, dignity, and trust, not control.

02 — We believe inclusivity benefits everyone
Public spaces must welcome people of different backgrounds, ages, and abilities. Designed for all people, not idealized users, inclusive spaces become more generous, more resilient, and more meaningful. A space that excludes is not truly public.

03 — We believe connection builds community
Cities are shaped by everyday encounters. Public spaces should support interaction without demanding it, allowing people to observe, greet, rest, and coexist. Connection can be social or silent, shared or personal. Belonging does not require participation, but it makes room for it.

04 — We believe joy is essential, not optional
Belonging is emotional. Comfort, beauty, materiality, and human scale create attachment and care. Joy may be playful, calm, seasonal, or subtle, but it invites people to stay, return, and feel at ease. When places feel good, people treat them, and each other, with more respect.

05 — We believe identity transforms space into place
Belonging deepens when places reflect shared values, local character, and long‑term care. When the people who use a place are involved in the design process, it feels familiar and meaningful to them. It signals that a place matters, and that people matter.

In short, Public Belonging is created when:
Safety enables presence.
Inclusivity enables participation.
Connection enables community.
Joy enables emotional attachment.
Identity enables pride and stewardship.

"Public Belonging is not a slogan or an abstract aspiration. It is the core idea that has shaped our work since 1947, now clearly defined. The Public Belonging Commitment explains what Public Belonging means, why it matters, and how we put it into practice. It's a commitment from Vestre, but even more important, it is a shared call to action to everyone involved in shaping public spaces"
