Rice University in Houston is one of the leading private research universities in the United States and is known for its campus shaped by generous open spaces. As part of its ongoing development, the Academic Quad was redesigned as a central outdoor area to enhance quality of stay and integrate the space more fully into everyday campus life.

The aim was to transform a space previously used mainly as a passage into an active destination. By reorganising pathways, seating areas and open zones, the quad now functions as a social hub, supporting informal exchange, studying and everyday use throughout the day.Within this context, customised elements from Vestre’s VROOM series are used. They structure the space, support different types of use and contribute to establishing the quad as a destination within the campus structure.The Academic Quad demonstrates how targeted interventions can upgrade existing campus spaces and turn them into active environments for interaction and daily use.
