“The Piazze Aperte (Open Plazas) program was established by the City of Milan as a way of accelerating the creation of public spaces within the city. The program began in 2018 after the release of the Milan 2030 Master Plan and the Neighborhoods Plan, which identified an immediate need for additional public spaces around the city.” (Bloomberg Associates).

Spoleto-Venini was chosen to be a part of the program, as it was an oversized crossroad in front of a primary school, with a lot of traffic and small sidewalks. The purpose of the redesign was to transform the space into a social meeting place covering the needs of the inhabitants of Spoleto-Venini. It needed a more secure space for pedestrians, a place for the parents of the school to wait for their kids, as well as a place for the elderly in the community to rest throughout the day.

In 2019 the project was completed, and with the use of paint and high-quality street furniture from Vestre, Spoleto-Venini was transformed into social meeting place to the benefit and enjoyment of the community.

Responsible for the project: Milan Commune in collaboration with Bloomberg associates and NACTO/GDCI.
