At 643 meters (just over 2,100 feet) above sea level, Ulriken is the highest of Bergen's famed seven peaks and has long been a popular hiking area for locals and visitors alike. In 2016 a comprehensive upgrade was embarked with the aim of making Ulriken more accessible, inviting, and functional for everyone.

The modernization of the Ulriksbanen mountain cable car made it easier for people to reach the top, from where visitors can enjoy spectacular views across the city of Bergen, the fjords, and the surrounding mountains. At the same time, the Skyskraperen Restaurant was expanded, with dishes based on local produce taking pride of place on its menu. Ulriken Kafé, known for its fresh-baked cakes and traditional Bergen fish soup, was also established.

For the adventurous, there are now several exciting activities to engage in, including Norway's fastest zipline and a number of gorgeous hiking trails, including the popular route between the Ulriken and Fløyen peaks. Along with new recreational areas, places to sit, and well-thought-out landscape design, these initiatives have transformed the mountain plateau into a comprehensive destination—somewhere to experience nature, tranquility, and elevated culinary delights. These improvements have led to an increase in popularity. Since its rejuvenation, Ulriken 643 has set new visitor records every year.

A natural meeting place

To create an inviting outdoor space, it was important to create opportunities for both recreation and social interaction. With its unique location, the design also had to harmonize with the dramatic mountain backdrop. The landscape architects at En til En Arkitekter worked closely with Ulriken 643 to find solutions that were both functional and in keeping with the surroundings.

Vestre was a natural collaborator in this context, with its robust and sleekly elegant furniture that can withstand the sometimes harsh weather conditions on the maintain top. The colors and materials were carefully selected to fit in with the surrounding landscape, where the muted shades of the mountain combine with flashes of bright color to bring life and contrast.

Vestre’s contribution—functional design in nature

Vestre supplied a number of products to meet visitors’ various needs at Ulriken. These were carefully sited to create attractive zones and a good flow across the area:

Seating for all—VROOM benches and tables create flexible meeting places for groups of all sizes.

Sun benches with views to die for—BLOC sun loungers are strategically placed so that visitors can lean back and enjoy the panoramic view over Bergen and the fjords.

Trash-sorting for a cleaner environment—ACCEPTOR waste sorting system ensures the area is kept clean and tidy.

Design in harmony with nature—materials and colors are carefully selected to reflect the nuances of the mountain plateau.

“Although Ulriken is somewhere primarily used by the local population, it is also an international tourist attraction. Visitors come from all over the world. We have received some very flattering feedback on our new terrace, which is furnished with pieces from Vestre,” says Amanda Haugland, Ulriken's general manager.

The result—a destination for everyone

Ulriken's upgrade has created a more accessible and holistic experience for hikers, adventure-seekers, and food-lovers. New gondolas have made it easier for everyone to reach the top. With its inviting outdoor areas, the mountain plateau has become a place where people want to linger—not just a place to visit, but a destination to experience.
